In 300 BC, the Egyptian Plotome dynasty gave Lefkon to Prince Lefkon, the son of a king, to establish a city and Lefkon became Lefke over time. Lefke, located in the northwest of Cyprus, has been preferred by many civilizations throughout history. The reason for preference is thought to be due to the copper deposits in Lefke. Lefke is home to many civilizations and is the oldest Turkish municipality. Lefke is 62 km from Nicosia and 68 km from Kyrenia.

Iskele, one of the 5 districts of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, was affiliated to Famagusta until 1 June 1998. As a result of the law passed the right to be a district.
